Nurses United, founded in 2019, is a grassroots organisation of nurses. The new campaign that brings nurses together to defend the NHS from cuts, understaffing and other long-term issues regards pay and conditions. Set up to complement the role of established unions such as the Royal College of Nursing, Nurses United is inspired by the organising tactics of US campaigners and aims to bring more of an activist voice and movement-building dynamic to the British nursing sector.

Recent activism has included a national day of action on August 8th, where Nurses United and other campaign groups called for a 15% payrise.

Isla’s support has meant that Nurses united have now:

  • Hired 2 members of staff
  • Launched their website
  • Media trained over 50 nurses with them having approximately 40 media appearances since Nurses United started

“Thanks to the Isla Foundation we were able to launch a grassroots campaign to get Nurses PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), grew our mailing list to 2,000 members and run 36 demonstrations of frontline NHS workers campaigning for health justice. Without them we couldn’t have built the website, hired the staff or had the tools to make this all possible.”
