With ISLA’s grant, British Youth Council will increase the awareness of, and access to, digital and assistive technology resources that are available to those with special educational needs and disabilities in Further Education colleges in England and Wales.

They will recruit up to 15 Regional Champions (all young people aged 16-21 with relevant lived experience) to lead their Coalition for Change, enabling social equality in education for affected young learners.

The fund also allows them to campaign for an accessibility by design approach in colleges.

A summary of the project:

  • 15 Regional Champions - all young people with relevant lived experience will be empowered with the skills and knowledge to create mechanisms for change within further education (FE) in their local areas.
  • Increase in uptake of the available assistive technology and resources in FE in every region of England and Wales, leading to improved educational outcomes for those with additional needs.
  • A hub of useful information, increasing knowledge and providing signposting and guidance to colleges and students on assistive tech opportunities and accessible resources.
  • Delivery of an end of project report demonstrating outputs, reach and scoping further work. Findings and insights offer a roadmap for future improvements.
