Barking and Dagenham Youth Dance is a champion grassroots charity who make positive changes to their East London community by offering high quality arts-based projects, youth dance workshops, community events and career pathway activities.

They use these activities to develop community cohesion, leadership skills and to break down the barriers of gender equality, cultural diversity and social/economic deprivation. They provide effective opportunities that engage local people in constructive action, emphasising common values such as friendship, citizenship and learning.

Isla’s grant will be used to upscale BDYD’s existing, leadership focused, youth action project ‘Bar-Ham Leaders’. They will work with 12 local young people, supporting them to design, lead and learn from their own youth led project. We are really excited to see what projects are championed by the group and will share that as soon as we know.

“It is imperative that we train our young people to understand the importance of having their voice heard and campaigning for meaningful change, particularly in response to Covid-19 and the impact we are seeing on lower socio-economic groups, such as youth unemployment, digital divide and issues around mental health.” - BDYD
